Having worked with molybdenum from the time we were established in 1967, we are experts in precision cutting, grinding, lapping, and polishing of molybdenum rod that meets our customers’ exacting standards for products requiring exceptional heat resistance without significant expansion and softening. Our technical skills are augmented by our expertise in eddy current testing (ECT), which enables us to inspect our molybdenum rod before further fabrication, to identify and remove cracks, pitting, and other flaws that would have an impact on our customers’ end products, such as lighting components, semiconductors, and other solid state devices.
Benefits of Molybdenum’s Unique Properties
Molybdenum is widely used in furnace applications, aerospace, energy industries, electronics, glass-to-metal seals, and other applications where resistance to high temperatures is advantageous.
We offer molybdenum rod sized to order and with a complete range of surface finishes according to your specifications. Our precision parts deliver the benefits of the material’s unique properties, useful for a range of industrial processes and applications requiring traits such as high melting temperature, low vapor pressure, low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, high density, and good corrosion and creep resistance.
Precision Grinding of Molybdenum Rod
Our expert centerless grinding eliminates scratch marks, die lines, gouges, and divots, as well as grinds away any surface occlusions on the outside of molybdenum rod. Our centerless grinding process enables us to reduce the diameter dimension and tighten the diameter tolerance, as well as eliminate longitudinal draw lines and die lines. We can also create surface finishes of various Ra values. For instance, we can grind molybdenum rod to a smooth surface finish — or, we can create a rougher finish with a radial pattern that is perpendicular to the length of the material.
Expertise in Rod Cut to Length
As specialists in cutting to length, we can cut molybdenum rod to the tightest tolerances without delamination or burrs and without scratches to the cut surface itself. Our abrasive technique is uniquely perfect for cutting all types of molybdenum rod — whether doped, alloyed, or pure — without cracking the metal itself and while providing the smoothest cut face possible, devoid of burrs, lines, scratches, and other imperfections that can ruin our customers’ devices.
In-House Eddy Current Testing
Eddy current testing is as much art as science, and because of that, we have two different ECT installations inside our factory to inspect molybdenum rod and other metal parts for potential issues such as cracking, pitting, and fractures.
Utilizing our two ECT methods to detect and characterize surface and sub-surface flaws in conductive materials, we are able to perform both absolute and differential measurements. We have a wide array of coil sizes and tooling that allows us to stay in the diameter detection “sweet spot,” even with a wide range of molybdenum rod sizes. By carefully monitoring phase, frequency, and amplitude parameters, we achieve the most accurate detection of cracks and defects possible.
