As long-time experts in the precision metal cut off business, we’ve perfected our EDM metal cutting capabilities to deliver the ultimate precision in 2-axis EDM cut off. As a result, our cut off method produces highly repeatable lengths, without end-deformation, distortion or delamination, more economically than many competing methods. As with all of our cutting services, no production run is too small and no quantity, too large.
EDM Metal Cutting Capabilities
Our highly specialized EDM process is excellent for pins, probes and other small diameter, solid metal parts that need to be produced consistently, accurately and in relatively large volumes. Our versatile EDM method can cut non-composite and non-coated materials ranging from copper to the hardest conductive metals, including molybdenum and tungsten.
A deliberate process that is designed for cutting materials that are solid and conduct electricity, EDM metal cutting is highly accurate for these types of applications. Our method works especially well for producing small parts with tight tolerances at high volumes. The results are consistently burr free, with a small kerf width generally from 0.004” to 0.012” (0.1 to 0.3 mm). Our EDM process can cut diameters ranging from a few thousandths of an inch to several inches; for highly repetitive cut part lengths from 0.5” (12 mm) to 18.0” (450 mm), our process also has extremely high dimensional accuracy.
Additionally, because EDM is optimized for complex shapes, squareness, parallelism and other end features are tightly held, and corner radii are minimal, meeting square cut requirements and allowing for subsequent processes to add radii, if needed.
Cpk and Ppk Advantages
Our EDM metal cutting method also results in parts with high central tendency values and is ideal for applications such as small diameter solids (less than 0.020” [0.50 mm]) needed at high volume and with high Cpk/Ppk. For example, we can use EDM to cut a precious metal wire of 0.004” (0.1 mm) diameter to 1” (25 mm) lengths with a length tolerance of +/- 0.001”, radiused ends and a Ppk well above the standard minimum of 1.33.
In addition, with our proprietary cut off machines and their advanced features performing the work, our EDM process not only delivers high levels of accuracy, repeatability and reliability; it also eliminates the need for human handling of cut parts, as well as process damage such as bending or scratching. Delicate parts go from their final diameter condition into our EDM machines for cutting and are then removed without human handling after being cut off and placed into post-processing cleaning and packaging — all without ever being exposed to human handling and the risks to a customer’s precision parts.
So, in the end, our combination of techniques, tools, equipment and know-how enable our EDM method to deliver accurate and repeatable results, whatever a customer’s specifications and dimensional requirements may be.
